Kolkata: The PWD Department of the West Bengal government has embarked on a project to expand seven roads and construct a new bridge in North 24 Parganas, the largest district in the state.
With a total outlay of Rs 370 crore, the list of work is complete, and tenders are soon going to come out in this geographically critical district.
North 24 Parganas shares international trade border outposts with Bangladesh at Petrapole and Ghojadanga. This has led to an increase in goods vehicles. In addition, both population and transport are also growing, leading to the need to expand the roads.
Both the district administration and the PWD department started surveys accordingly and identified seven roads for immediate expansion.
The Taki Road will.be expanded from the Golabari petrol pump to Berachampa along with dividers. The expansion of this 11.5 km road will cost Rs 70 crore.
From Berachampa to Trimohini in Basirhat, another 11.5 km road will be widened from five meters to seven meters at an expense of Rs 22 crore.
The 36 km road from Bongaon to Duttaphulia via Helencha will.be widened from 5.5 meters to seven meters. This project will incur a cost of Rs 70 crore.
The 12.5 km road from Langolpota to Kachkal will be widened to a four-lane road for Rs 100 crore.
The Zilla Parishad has handed over the road from Eco Park in Salt Lake to Kalur More to the PWD. This road will.be expanded and widened for Rs 22 crore.
A 6 km road, which is 3.5 metres wide from Guma in Ashok Nagar to Balisha via Rajibpur, will be widened to five metres at a cost of Rs 15 crore.
A total of Rs 317 crore has been allocated by the PWD for the widening and expansion of these roads. Already, a few hundred km of roads in the district have been widened under the Pathasree scheme.
In addition, with Ghojadanga in Basirhat being an important trade transit point with Bangladesh, goods vehicles pass through Basirhat town, only causing traffic jams.
To resolve this, the Lakshmikantapur Bridge will be constructed in Baduria for Rs 53 crore. Work will start on this in the next month only.
