Gandhinagar, October 5 (APAC Media): Gujarat is set for its biggest expansion of rooftop solar on government buildings, with the state planning to install grid-connected solar systems on 15,000 additional government buildings during 2026-27.
The expansion is expected to add around 65 MW of renewable energy capacity, taking the state’s public-building solar programme to a significantly larger scale. The announcement was made by Climate Change Minister Arjun Modhwadia.
6,014 Government Buildings Already Covered
The programme has been implemented by the Gujarat Energy Development Agency (GEDA) under the Climate Change Department since 2011-12.
During 2025-26, rooftop solar systems were installed on 1,377 government buildings, adding 17.1 MW of capacity. By March 2026, the programme had covered 6,014 government buildings, with cumulative installed capacity reaching 95 MW.
The initiative is aimed at increasing renewable-energy use across public infrastructure, reducing dependence on conventional electricity and lowering power expenditure for government offices.
Rs 314 Crore Allocated for 2026-27
The Gujarat Government has made a Rs 314 crore budget provision for the programme for 2026-27.
Of this, Rs 278 crore has been allocated for general government buildings, Rs 33 crore for buildings managed by the Tribal Development Department and Rs 3 crore for buildings under the Social Justice and Empowerment Department. The projects receive 100 per cent capital-cost support through the Climate Change Department’s annual budget allocation.
Minister of State for Climate Change Pravin Mali said the installations would help reduce conventional electricity consumption and power expenditure while lowering pollution associated with conventional power generation.
IIoT System Adds Digital Monitoring
Gujarat has also introduced an Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT)-based Renewable Energy Monitoring System to digitally track renewable-energy installations on government buildings.
The system integrates smart meters, sensors and IoT gateways connected through GPRS, 4G and Ethernet networks. It can generate automated remote alerts and capture performance data every 15 minutes, producing up to 96 readings a day.
The monitoring interface currently tracks renewable-energy capacity comprising 142.5 MW of solar power and 68.3 MW of wind power, according to the state government.
The rooftop solar programme forms part of Gujarat’s wider renewable-energy expansion. The state government, citing Ministry of New and Renewable Energy data, said Gujarat has 47,178 MW of installed renewable-energy capacity, making it the leading state nationally on this measure.
