Ministry of Civil Aviation launches UDAN 5.1 to boost connectivity in remote areas through helicopters
Summarize with:

New Delhi: The Ministry of Civil Aviation has introduced UDAN 5.1, an extension of the successful Regional Connectivity Scheme (RCS) – Ude Desh Ka Aam Nagrik (UDAN). The scheme aims at enhancing connectivity to remote areas and achieving last-mile connectivity through helicopters, said the Ministry in a statement recently.

In a first for RCS-UDAN, this round specifically focuses on helicopter routes, offering new opportunities for operators to expand their operations. One notable change is that routes will now be permitted even if only one of the origin or destination locations is in a priority area, compared to the previous requirement of both points being in priority areas.

To make helicopter travel more affordable, airfare caps have been reduced by up to 25 percent for passengers. Additionally, Viability Gap Funding (VGF) caps for operators of both single and twin-engine helicopters have been significantly increased, aiming to enhance the financial viability of operating the awarded routes.

“The latest round of UDAN scheme is a testament to two emerging phenomenon in Indian civil aviation – one, a deeper democratisation of air travel with a focus on last-mile connectivity. Second, a growing appetite for helicopters in aiding tourism. Greater helicopter penetration through such efforts will help boost tourism, hospitality, and thus, our local economies. UDAN 5.1 heralds a new dawn not just for civil aviation, but also for India’s remote and unserved regions.” said Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, Union Minister of Civil Aviation and Steel.

urther, the statement added that the development of UDAN 5.1 involved extensive consultations with stakeholders, including helicopter operators, to ensure its effectiveness in providing last-mile connectivity. The scheme not only aims to improve accessibility but also intends to boost the helicopter segment of the Indian civil aviation industry.

Previous rounds of the scheme have already operationalised 46 helicopter routes, benefiting hilly and North-East states. The current round aims to cover an even larger number of routes, expanding the reach of air connectivity.

UDAN has proven beneficial for passengers, airlines, and unserved regions, facilitating economic development and providing affordable air travel options. UDAN 5.1 aligns with the vision of the Prime Minister to make air travel accessible to the common man, particularly to remote destinations, at affordable fares.
