New Delhi: The Union Cabinet has approved the construction of 62,500 km of new roads under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY-IV) to link 25,000 unconnected habitations across the country. The project, with a total outlay of ₹70,125 crore, will be implemented from 2024 to 2029, focusing on providing all-weather roads to remote villages.
The central government will contribute ₹49,087.50 crore, while states will provide ₹21,037.50 crore. The project will cover habitations with populations of 500+ in plains, 250+ in Northeast and hill states, and 100+ in Left-Wing Extremism (LWE) affected districts, as per Census 2011 data.
The roads are expected to drive socio-economic development in rural areas, connecting villages to essential services like schools, healthcare, and markets. Bridges along the new road alignments will also be built where needed. This infrastructure initiative aims to transform remote rural regions by improving accessibility and fostering local growth.
