New Delhi: India has collaborated with the United States to set up the first-ever national security semiconductor fabrication plant in the country. The facility will be the production hub for chips to be used in military hardware and critical telecommunication networks in both countries.
The fabrication plant to be named ‘Shakti’, will focus on three major pillars of modern warfighting, i.e., advanced sensing, advanced communications, and high voltage power electronics. The complete project will receive support from the India Semiconductor Mission and will be a part of the Strategic Technology Partnership among Bharat Semi, 3rdiTech, and the US Space Force. It will not only be India’s but the world’s first multi-material fab for national security.
Emphasizing the significance of the project, Foreign Secretary, Vikram Misri explained that this plant is one of its kind as it has been established to manufacture infrared, gallium nitride, and silicon carbide semiconductors. The project represents India’s designing and manufacturing capacities in the semiconductor sector. It is also expected to enhance mutually beneficial linkages in research and development in chip manufacturing.
