Gujarat: The Gujarat government has formed an AI task force to implement artificial intelligence in governance and socio-economic development. The announcement comes days after the state passed a resolution emphasizing AI’s strategic role in improving public service delivery and driving growth.
The task force, led by the principal secretary of the Department of Science and Technology, will initially operate for a year and undergo an annual review to assess its impact and refine its scope. The group comprises 10 members, including directors from IIT Gandhinagar, IIIT Vadodara, and senior experts from organizations such as the India AI Mission, National Informatics Centre (NIC), and the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC). Representatives from tech entities like NVIDIA and the Indian Software Products Industry Round Table (iSPIRT) are also part of the task force.
According to a government statement, the initiative aims to use AI to streamline service delivery, ensuring citizens benefit from government schemes more efficiently. The deployment will focus on leveraging AI for decision-making, predictive analytics, and process automation.
The task force’s establishment aligns with Gujarat’s recent Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Microsoft to set up an AI Centre of Excellence in GIFT City. The center will work on pilot projects using technologies like machine learning and cognitive services. Successful pilots are expected to expand into full-scale initiatives across sectors, including healthcare, education, and manufacturing. The center will also focus on upskilling through training programs to build AI capabilities at multiple levels.
This task force is part of Gujarat’s broader effort to integrate advanced technology into governance and industry, with an emphasis on innovation. Officials have highlighted the need for sustained evaluations to enhance the task force’s role over time.
