New Delhi: The Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT Delhi) has announced the launch of a PhD program in Energy and Sustainability at its new international campus in Abu Dhabi. The program will welcome its first cohort in January 2025, with applications now open. Notably, the application fee for this inaugural batch has been waived. Qualified candidates will also benefit from full tuition waivers and generous monthly scholarships, extended to both UAE nationals and international students.
The program emphasizes advanced research on achieving NetZero targets, focusing on areas such as renewable energy, sustainable process engineering, decarbonization, microgrids, and AI applications in energy transitions. Aspiring candidates will undergo a rigorous selection process that includes academic evaluations, qualifying exam scores, relevant experience, and interviews.
The launch of the PhD program builds on earlier academic offerings at IIT Delhi’s Abu Dhabi campus, including an MTech in Energy Transition and Sustainability introduced in January 2024 and two BTech programs in Computer Science and Energy Engineering, launched in September 2024.
Established in line with the vision of UAE and Indian leadership, IIT Delhi’s Abu Dhabi campus was inaugurated on September 2, 2024, by HH Sheikh Khaled, the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi. Located at Zayed University, the campus signifies a commitment to fostering innovation and sustainable solutions in the region.
APAC News Analysis:
The launch of this PhD program reflects a strategic response to the global urgency of addressing climate change. By integrating advanced research areas such as renewable energy, decarbonization, and AI-driven energy transitions, the initiative not only aims to contribute to NetZero targets but also positions Abu Dhabi as a hub for sustainable innovation. The alignment with the UAE’s strategic vision and India’s academic expertise underscores a broader commitment to fostering cross-border collaboration for addressing critical energy challenges of the future.
This development is part of an ongoing trend among Indian institutions establishing offshore campuses to enhance their global presence.
