Noida, Sep 8 (APAC Media): The Centre’s Rs 37,500-crore push for coal and lignite gasification has attracted seven applications from five companies, including Adani Enterprises and state-run NTPC, the Ministry of Coal said on Tuesday.
The other applicants are Talcher Fertilisers, Gallantt Ispat and Shyam Sel & Power.
Adani Enterprises has submitted three separate proposals for urea production, while Talcher Fertilisers has also proposed a urea project. NTPC has applied for a synthetic natural gas project, Gallantt Ispat has proposed a project for direct reduced iron (DRI) and syngas, and Shyam Sel & Power has sought support for a syngas production project.
The first application round opened in July and closed on September 7. The proposals will now be evaluated in accordance with the scheme guidelines and the Request for Proposal (RFP), the ministry said.
The Ministry of Coal described the response as a sign of growing industry confidence in coal gasification.
“When we said reports of ‘no takers’ were premature, we were confident that industry would respond and it has, decisively,” a senior Ministry of Coal official said.
“Seven applications in the very first round, including from some of India’s largest industrial houses and public sector undertakings, are a clear vote of confidence in the scheme and in India’s coal gasification mission,” the official said.
The scheme, approved by the Union Cabinet in May, has a total financial outlay of Rs 37,500 crore. It seeks to encourage the conversion of domestic coal and lignite into higher-value products such as syngas, methanol, ammonia and urea.
The government is targeting 100 million tonnes of coal gasification capacity by 2030, of which 75 million tonnes is expected to be developed under the new scheme.
The initiative is also aimed at reducing India’s dependence on imported liquefied natural gas, urea, ammonia and methanol. These products together accounted for imports worth around Rs 2.77 lakh crore in 2024-25, according to the ministry.
The government expects the programme to catalyse investments of Rs 2.5 lakh crore to Rs 3 lakh crore across projects and generate around 50,000 direct and indirect jobs.
The ministry on Tuesday opened the second application round under the scheme. Under the rolling process, fresh application windows will open every two months, allowing companies to submit proposals as their projects become ready.
The programme builds on the Rs 8,500-crore financial incentive scheme approved in January 2024, under which eight coal gasification projects are currently under implementation.
