Mumbai: DTDC Express Ltd. has opened its third all-women-operated branch in Thane, Mumbai, as part of its ongoing efforts to increase gender diversity in India’s logistics sector. The facility, spanning 7,500 sq. ft, will be fully managed by women employees, handling around 100 tons of inbound and outbound shipments each month.
Expanding Women’s Role in Logistics
The Thane hub follows the company’s earlier initiatives in Marol (Mumbai) and Kolkata, reinforcing a shift toward more inclusive employment policies in logistics. Women at this facility will oversee nearly 30% of shipments, each weighing over 3 kg, a role traditionally dominated by men in the sector.
Abhishek Chakraborty, CEO of DTDC Express Ltd., inaugurated the facility on International Women’s Day, emphasizing the importance of diverse representation in logistics operations. He cited findings from Gartner’s 2024 Women in Supply Chain Survey, which indicates a growing trend of women taking on leadership roles in the sector.
Addressing Workforce Gaps in Logistics
Despite being a critical industry, logistics remains male-dominated, with women historically underrepresented in operational roles. DTDC’s initiative aligns with broader efforts to address these gaps and create an inclusive workforce. The company reports that women now make up 41% of its workforce, reflecting gradual changes in hiring patterns across the logistics industry.
DTDC operates one of India’s largest express logistics networks, with over 16,000 channel partners. While the company has positioned its all-women branches as a step toward gender equity, the long-term impact of these initiatives on employment trends in the sector remains to be seen.
