New Delhi: In exercise of the powers conferred by the Constitution of India, President Droupadi Murmu has appointed Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai as the 52nd Chief Justice of India (CJI), succeeding Justice Sanjiv Khanna, who has demitted the office.
Justice Gavai, currently the senior-most judge of the Supreme Court after the outgoing CJI, was recommended for the top post by Justice Khanna. He will officially assume office on 14th May 2025 and will serve a tenure of six months, demitting office on 23rd December upon reaching the age of 65.
Hailing from Maharashtra, Justice Gavai began his legal career at the Bombay High Court. He was elevated to the Supreme Court in May 2019 and has since built a reputation for his integrity, balanced judgments, and deep understanding of constitutional law. Over the years, he has presided over several significant civil, criminal, and constitutional cases.
His appointment comes at a pivotal time for the Indian judiciary, which is grappling with key issues such as judicial reforms, case backlogs, and rising public expectations regarding transparency and efficiency in the justice system.
