Khavda: Adani Group has announced plans to build a large-scale battery energy storage system (BESS) at Khavda in Gujarat, marking its entry into India’s fast-growing energy storage sector. The 1,126 MW/3,530 MWh facility is slated for completion by March 2026 and will be developed within the world’s largest renewable energy park at Khavda.
According to the company, the project will consist of more than 700 BESS containers and aims to address grid stability and peak-load management challenges in India’s renewable ecosystem. The storage system will help balance energy supply during peak demand hours, reduce transmission congestion, and minimize solar energy curtailment, key issues in integrating large-scale renewable power into the national grid.
The project will employ advanced lithium-ion battery technology coupled with energy management systems, enabling seamless integration with Adani’s existing renewable generation assets. Once operational, the Khavda BESS is expected to enhance the reliability of renewable energy dispatch and support India’s transition toward a low-carbon power system.
Adani Group stated that the initiative aligns with its broader goal of scaling energy storage capacity to 15 GWh by FY27 and up to 50 GWh within five years. The move places the conglomerate among a small group of energy companies globally investing in grid-scale battery infrastructure, which is seen as critical to meeting India’s net-zero targets and ensuring round-the-clock clean power availability.
Industry analysts note that large-scale storage projects like Khavda will play a crucial role in strengthening India’s renewable grid, especially as solar and wind generation expand rapidly across states.
