Gangtok, June 4 (APAC Media): In a significant step towards strengthening reproductive healthcare services in the state, the Sikkim Government has signed a technical partnership agreement with the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi.
The initiative aims to establish the Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) facility at STNM Hospital in Gangtok.
The agreement was formalised under the Sikkim INSPIRES initiative of the Planning & Development Department. The initiative is being implemented under the leadership of Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang with the objective of enhancing healthcare infrastructure and expanding access to specialised medical services for residents of the state.
Under the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), AIIMS New Delhi will provide comprehensive technical support for the development and operation of the ART facility. The support will include training and capacity building for a wide range of medical and technical personnel, including infertility specialists, andrologists, embryologists, nurses, counsellors, administrative staff and other healthcare professionals.
AIIMS will also assist in developing clinical protocols, quality assurance systems, and operational best practices to ensure that the facility delivers high-quality reproductive healthcare services in line with national standards.
Officials said the ART unit is currently under construction on the eighth floor of STNM Hospital and is expected to become operational by the end of 2026. Once functional, the centre will offer infertility diagnosis and treatment services within Sikkim, reducing the need for patients to travel outside the state for specialised care.
The initiative is expected to make advanced reproductive healthcare more accessible and affordable for residents while strengthening the state’s healthcare ecosystem.Â
