Snap Acquires Illumix to Push Ahead in AR Smart Glasses Race

New Delhi, June 7(CXO Media): Snap has acquired augmented reality firm Illumix as it steps up efforts in building its smart glasses and spatial computing ecosystem. The deal strengthens Snap’s focus on AR-driven hardware and immersive digital experiences, though financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.

Illumix, founded in 2017, is known for developing AR-based applications that blend digital content with real-world environments, including location-aware and interactive experiences. The startup has also worked on AI-enabled systems that adapt digital content based on user surroundings.

Snap will integrate Illumix’s technology and engineering talent into its AR operations, particularly to support its Specs smart glasses initiative. The company has been expanding its wearable computing efforts, positioning smart glasses as a long-term platform alongside its core Snapchat app.
The acquisition also aligns with Snap’s broader investment in spatial computing tools, including AR lenses and developer ecosystems that power real-world digital overlays.

Snap has been building its Specs division as it competes in the emerging wearable technology market. The company expects AR eyewear to play a larger role in how users interact with digital content in the future, moving beyond smartphones.
Illumix employees are expected to join Snap, helping accelerate product development in AR mapping and environment-based computing systems.
