New Delhi, July 10 (APAC Media): Coal India Limited (CIL) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC), a key arm of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).
The partnership aims to develop an advanced AI-powered satellite-based geospatial dashboard to boost digital transformation and sustainable mining.
The dashboard will:
- enhance monitoring, visualisation, and environmental auditing of mining operations across all Coal India leaseholds and subsidiaries.Â
- integrate satellite imagery, artificial intelligence, and predictive analytics to improve operational efficiency, strengthen regulatory compliance, and promote environmentally responsible mining practices.
The agreement was signed during a virtual ceremony connecting the NRSC team in Hyderabad with Coal India’s corporate headquarters in Kolkata. It was executed in the presence of Achyut Ghatak, Director (Technical), Coal India Limited, and Dr. Prakash Chauhan, Director, NRSC.
Key areas where the dashboard will support the authorities:
- Monitoring mine closure activities and compliance.
- Tracking land reclamation and environmental restoration projects.
- Assessing the progress of afforestation and the development of green cover.
- Digitally monitoring mining operations within approved lease boundaries.
- Detecting and preventing unauthorised mining outside legally permitted areas.
- Mapping Rehabilitation and Resettlement (R&R) colonies and project-affected regions.
The platform will leverage Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), Deep Learning, and Predictive Analytics to automate the analysis of satellite imagery. This will enable faster detection of changes in mining areas and improve monitoring accuracy across active coalfields.
The initiative is expected to improve operational efficiency, enhance environmental protection, strengthen mine safety, and support smarter decision-making through continuous satellite-based monitoring.
