Lucknow, July 15 (APAC Media): Uttar Pradesh has received a major road infrastructure boost with the inauguration of the Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway and the launch of national highway projects worth nearly Rs 4,850 crore.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for three highway projects in Lucknow.
The projects aim to improve regional connectivity, reduce travel time and support economic growth across the state.
Lucknow-Kanpur Travel Time Cut to 25 Minutes
The newly inaugurated 63-km, six-lane Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway is a greenfield project connecting the two major cities.
The expressway is expected to reduce the journey between Lucknow and Kanpur to around 25 minutes.
Gadkari said he travelled from Unnao to Sarojini Nagar in just 22 minutes using the new route.
The project is also expected to ease pressure on existing roads and improve industrial connectivity in the Lucknow-Kanpur region.
Rs 541 Crore Road Projects Launched
The foundation stone was also laid for two road projects worth nearly Rs 541 crore.
These include a four-lane road from the Hardoi-Lucknow border to the Lucknow Ring Road and a one-kilometre four-lane flyover at Engineering College Crossing.
The projects will strengthen road connectivity and ease traffic congestion in and around Lucknow.
Elevated Road and Metro Project Gets Approval
Rajnath Singh also announced the approval of an elevated road and metro project over Shaheed Path in Lucknow.
The design and Detailed Project Report are expected to be completed by December 2026. The project will feature a three-level, single-pier structure using Malaysia-based technology.
Gadkari said the foundation stone will be laid after the completion of the DPR.
Lucknow-Sitapur Highway to Become Six-Lane
The Centre also plans to upgrade the Lucknow-Sitapur route into a six-lane highway.
The project is expected to reduce travel time from nearly two and a half hours to around 50 minutes.
A service road along Kisan Path is also planned to improve local connectivity.
UP Eyes Rs 60,000 Crore Highway Projects
Gadkari said highway projects worth Rs 50,000 crore to Rs 60,000 crore are planned for Uttar Pradesh.
The proposed projects include the Lucknow-Gonda-Padrauna bypass, Dadri-Lal Kuan highway, Barabanki-Bahraich highway and Agra-Gwalior highway.
Other planned routes include Ghazipur-Manjhi, Gorakhpur-Shamli and Gorakhpur-Siliguri highways.
Expressway to Support State Capital Region
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said the Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway will support the development of Uttar Pradesh’s State Capital Region (SCR).
The regional plan covers Lucknow and surrounding districts, including Barabanki, Sitapur, Hardoi, Unnao and Rae Bareli.
Yogi said stronger road, rail, metro and airport connectivity has helped transform Uttar Pradesh’s infrastructure landscape.
Rajnath Singh added that improved transport links could attract industries, create employment and strengthen economic activity around Lucknow.
The new expressway and upcoming highway projects are expected to further strengthen Uttar Pradesh’s connectivity and support long-term industrial and regional growth.
