Trichy: Trichy city police have taken a new approach to combat a recent surge in crimes. The police have embarked on hotspot mapping in the city to identify areas of repeated offenses, poorly illuminated areas, and localities with less movement of people.
Commissioner of police, Trichy city, M Sathya Priya, told TOI that the process of hotspot mapping is almost complete. All assistant commissioners of police (ACPs) have been instructed to monitor the patrolling in the hotspots to ensure that all areas are covered in time. “Trichy city police are working hard to bring down the crimes. We have instructed all the inspectors to augment the CCTV cameras in their areas as a part of the measure,” CoP said.
The crimes mostly occurred between 6 pm and 10 pm, and offenders came from Trichy and neighboring districts, including Karur and Pudukkottai. Most of them were first-time offenders, and the police have been taking fingerprints and uploading them into the Crime and Criminal Tracking Network & Systems (CCTNS) and face recognition software (FRS). Additionally, the police plan to increase the number of surveillance cameras in the city, with a requirement of 1,600 more CCTV cameras. The commissioner has also appreciated residential welfare associations for installing CCTVs on their own.
