Navi Mumbai: The City and Industrial Development Corporation (Cidco) has approved the deployment of Navi Mumbai Metro’s Line 2, 3 and 4 with a modified mode of transport called Metro Neo in lieu of standard gauge metro. Since Cidco is all set to open the 11km long Navi Mumbai Metro Line-1, the first metro service in Navi Mumbai between Belapur railway station and Pendhar near Taloja which is waiting for the final approval from the Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety, Cidco has validated the implementation Metro Neo for its remaining 3 projects like Metro Lines 2, 3, 4. Metro Neo is a rubber tyre bi-articulated electric trolley-bus powered by overhead traction.
Metro Neo coaches are smaller and lighter than conventional Metro trains. It is energy-efficient, with minimal noise pollution, and an environment-friendly system. The Metro Neo is an overhead traction trolley bus system with rubber tyres. “Metro Neo is an innovative transport system, designated for cities having a population of up to 20 lakh. It is a seamless, fast, reliable and cost-effective Mass Rapid Transport System (MRTS). It will provide travel experience of international standards at par with Metro systems,” said Cidco vice chairman and managing director Sanjay Mukherjee.
