HYDERABAD: With the formation of algae across various corners of Hussainsagar lake, sanitation workers have begun spraying chemicals to clear them across the water body.
The green algae usually spreads across the lake when the sewage and other pollutants increase in the water body. These organisms have severe effect on the water body’s aquatic life as they contain extremely dangerous toxins.
To contain its growth, the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) has deployed workers to spray algaecide across the affected areas mainly situated towards People’s Plaza direction and children’s park.
Locals are struggling with foul stench for the last 10 days from Hussainsagar after the recent spell of unseasonal rains that lashed the city.
Experts said that there is a need to conduct algae testing to ascertain the cause behind its blooming.
“If it’s green algae, then the primary reason is nitrates and phosphates present in sewerage as waste water also contains waste detergents. This is the main fodder for algae and no matter how much algaecide is used, the solution is only temporary,” BV Subba Rao, a technical member of water domain, BIS informed.
