New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced on Saturday that veteran BJP leader Lal Krishna Advani will be honoured with the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award.
PM Modi took to X (formerly Twitter) and said, “One of the most respected statesmen of our times, his contribution to the development of India is monumental. His is a life that started from working at the grassroots to serving the nation as our Deputy Prime Minister.” The Prime Minister commended Advani’s exemplary parliamentary interventions, noting his roles as Home Minister and I&B Minister.
Born in Karachi in 1927, Advani served as the President of the Bharatiya Janata Party for an extended period since its inception in 1980. He held key positions such as Home Minister and Deputy Prime Minister in Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s cabinet (1999-2004).
PM Modi praised Advani’s decades-long commitment to transparency, integrity, and high political ethics. Expressing personal gratitude, PM Modi said, “The conferring of the Bharat Ratna on him is a very emotional moment for me. I will always consider it my privilege that I got countless opportunities to interact with him and learn from him.”
