New Delhi: Tata Group is reportedly in advanced discussions with Taiwan’s Pegatron to establish a partnership for the iPhone assembly plant being constructed in Hosur City, Tamil Nadu. This facility will be Tata’s second iPhone assembly plant in India.
The joint venture aims to accelerate Tata’s manufacturing plans for the Hosur plant, marking the company’s first such initiative. The partnership would involve Pegatron providing technical and engineering support at the facility, according to undisclosed sources familiar with the matter.
Analysts predict that the proportion of iPhones manufactured in India will increase from 12-14% in 2023 to 20-25% this year.
Tata’s new plant, expected to feature 20 assembly lines for iPhones, is anticipated to be a joint venture with Pegatron, with Tata holding a majority stake. This collaboration is seen as a strategic move to expedite the manufacturing process, recognising the challenges of building everything from scratch.
Currently, Tata operates its first iPhone assembly plant in Karnataka, acquired from Taiwan’s Wistron in the previous year. Independently, Pegatron already runs an iPhone assembly plant in Tamil Nadu and is in talks to establish a second facility, contributing approximately 10% of Apple’s iPhone output in India. Taiwan’s Foxconn handles the majority of Apple’s production in the country.
