New Delhi: India has become a significant choice for Apple’s iPhone production, with the Tata Group set to manufacture these devices for both the Indian and international markets.
The Electronics and Technology Minister, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, has announced that this project will be completed within two and a half years, with government support extended to the Tata Group and other Indian electronics companies collaborating with global brands.
Chandrasekhar said, “@GoI_MeitY stands fully in support in growth of Global Indian Electronics companies that will in turn support global Electronic brands that want to make India their trusted manufacturing and talent partner and to realise PM’s goal of making India a global electronics power,” via his official X (formerly Twitter) account.
This development was finalised after Wistron Corp., a Taiwan-based contract manufacturer for Apple, granted their approval to sell its India unit to the Tata Group for $125 million. Tata Group will acquire a 100% stake in Wistron InfoComm Manufacturing (India) Private Limited (WMMI) pending board approval, subject to further necessary approvals.
This transition signifies a change in Apple’s production strategy, as it traditionally relied on Chinese factories for most of its iPhone manufacturing. However, the trade tensions between the US and China, along with increasing labor costs in China, have compelled Apple to seek alternative production sources. India, with its substantial consumer base, skilled workforce, and supportive government policies, has become an appealing choice.
Apple has been assembling iPhones in India since 2017, beginning with the iPhone SE and subsequently expanding its operations to produce the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus locally.
