Kanpur, September 28 (APAC Media): IAS Mahendra Singh Tanwar (2015 batch) has assumed charge as the new District Magistrate of Kanpur Nagar.
He succeeds IAS Jitendra Pratap Singh in the role. Tanwar, a Uttar Pradesh cadre officer, formally took charge after arriving at the district treasury, marking the beginning of his tenure in one of Uttar Pradesh’s key administrative and industrial centres.
Tanwar was serving as the District Magistrate of Kushinagar before his appointment to Kanpur. He held the position from April 2025 to September 2026, having earlier served as District Magistrate of Sant Kabir Nagar.
An engineering graduate, Tanwar studied BTech in Textile Engineering and worked in the private sector for two years before clearing the Civil Services Examination in 2015 and joining the Indian Administrative Service. A native of Rohtak district in Haryana, he has held several important administrative assignments across Uttar Pradesh.
His previous postings include Municipal Commissioner of Ghaziabad, Vice-Chairman of the Gorakhpur Development Authority (GDA), Chief Development Officer of Shahjahanpur, and Joint Magistrate in Bahraich and Etah. These assignments have given him experience in urban administration, development planning, and district-level governance.
Tanwar is known for a field-oriented administrative approach, including inspections and close monitoring of government schemes and public service delivery.
His appointment comes as Kanpur Nagar continues to face the demands of managing a large urban population alongside its industrial and economic activities. As District Magistrate, Tanwar will oversee key aspects of district administration, urban governance, development coordination, and law-and-order management.
Meanwhile, outgoing Kanpur DM Jitendra Pratap Singh, who took charge of the district in January 2025, has been appointed Director of the Uttar Pradesh State Agricultural Production Mandi Council. His tenure in Kanpur included a focus on public outreach and assistance to vulnerable sections of society.
