Chennai: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras and the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) have joined forces to tackle thermal challenges faced by spacecraft. For this purpose, the organizations will jointly establish a ‘Centre for Excellence in Fluid and Thermal Sciences’ with a total investment of Rs. 1.84 crores.
Thermal management is an important aspect of spacecraft and launch vehicle design. It directly impacts the performance, reliability, and longevity of space missions. The extreme temperature variations in space environments create significant challenges. The primary objective of the centre will be to address those challenges through innovative solutions by focusing on advanced fluid and thermal sciences.
The partnership between academia and the space agency is expected to produce advanced research and practical applications in the field. Additionally, it is likely to promote a new generation of technology experts by providing students and researchers with opportunities to work on real-world space-engineering challenges.
