Global digital infrastructure firm Equinix Inc. has signed its first power purchase agreement (PPA) in India with renewable energy provider CleanMax to establish a 33 MW captive power plant in Maharashtra. The project, consisting of 26.4 MWp of solar and 6.6 MW of wind capacity, will supply renewable energy to Equinix’s data centers in Mumbai and contribute to India’s renewable energy targets.
The plant, scheduled to become operational in phases by 2025, will support Equinix’s International Business Exchange (IBX) data centers in Mumbai, providing renewable energy coverage as demand for digital infrastructure grows in the region.
“This PPA not only strengthens our commitment to sustainability but also enables us to provide our customers in India with 100% renewable energy coverage for their deployments at Equinix,” said Manoj Paul, Managing Director, Equinix India.
Raouf Abdel, Executive Vice President of Global Operations at Equinix, emphasized the importance of sustainable energy sources to support the growth of digital infrastructure. “As the demand for data centers continues to grow, ensuring a sustainable and reliable energy source becomes a significant challenge,” he said.
The partnership with CleanMax aligns with Equinix’s broader commitment to expanding renewable energy use. Earlier in 2024, Equinix signed PPAs in Australia and Singapore. With this latest agreement in India, Equinix has now executed 23 PPAs globally, contributing over 3.1 million MWh of renewable energy annually to local grids across nine countries, including the US, France, and Sweden.
Equinix also invested $77.5 million in energy efficiency projects globally in 2023, reducing annual energy consumption by 66,862 MWh and improving Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) by 8.8% year over year.
CleanMax, a Brookfield-backed company with a portfolio of over 2 GW in operating renewable assets, has been aiding corporations in achieving sustainability goals. Kuldeep Jain, Managing Director, CleanMax, said, “This partnership signifies a milestone step towards transforming the energy landscape for digital infrastructure.”
