New Delhi: Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) and the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (IIT KGP) have jointly established a research center in Kolkata to drive innovation in digital health, robotics, and intelligent systems. Located at the IIT KGP Research Park in New Town, the center focuses on integrating academia and industry to address emerging technological challenges.
The TCS Research Center includes three specialized labs dedicated to Sensing and Communications, Edge Computing and Analytics, and Robotics and Visual Computing. These labs are equipped with advanced tools to support research in cutting-edge fields like Artificial Intelligence, edge computing, and embedded systems. Over 150 TCS researchers will collaborate with IIT KGP faculty to work on projects aimed at creating industry-relevant solutions.
Dr. Harrick Vin, Chief Technology Officer of TCS, highlighted the company’s intent to strengthen ties with academic institutions to facilitate the exchange of knowledge and talent. The collaboration will also support TCS-funded research programs with IIT KGP and other academic partners.
Beyond research, the center will include a customer experience facility designed to showcase solutions across industries, including healthcare, agriculture, mobility, and manufacturing. Workshops at this facility will bring together TCS scientists, IIT KGP researchers, and industry experts to tackle sector-specific problems through collaborative efforts.
The initiative aligns with TCS’ strategy of partnering with elite academic institutions to combine resources for addressing industry demands and societal challenges. This partnership with IIT KGP builds on a similar research collaboration TCS initiated at IIT Madras, marking another step in its push to co-locate research labs with academia.
The establishment of this center reflects a growing trend of industry-academia partnerships aimed at fostering innovation and creating practical solutions for pressing global challenges.
