Guwahati: In a significant move recognizing Ratan Tata’s contributions to Assam’s development, the state cabinet has decided to name the upcoming Electronics City in Jagiroad as Ratan Tata Electronic City.
This decision underscores the Tata Group’s longstanding engagement in Assam and its pivotal role in shaping the state’s industrial landscape.
The announcement comes shortly after Tata Sons chairman N Chandrasekaran highlighted Ratan Tata’s deep-rooted connection with Assam at the Advantage Assam 2.0 Investment Summit in February.
Chandrasekaran emphasized that the Tata Group’s relationship with Assam has been nurtured over decades and is based on a shared commitment to progress in the Northeast.
Tata’s Vision for Assam’s Semiconductor Industry
In March last year, Ratan Tata had expressed his vision to position Assam as a major player in the semiconductor industry. Tata Electronics is currently investing Rs 27,000 crore to establish India’s first indigenous semiconductor assembly and test facility in the state.
The facility, designed to produce 48 million chips per day, is set to be India’s largest semiconductor chip packaging plant and is expected to generate 30,000 jobs.
Chandrasekaran also highlighted that Tata intends to establish a mobile phone technology facility in Assam, creating 30,000 jobs and strengthening India’s electronics manufacturing capabilities. This initiative aims to expand Assam’s role in urban and mobile technology, further boosting employment opportunities.
Tata Group’s Expanding Presence in Assam
The Tata Group has played a crucial role in Assam’s economic and social development across various sectors. Currently, Tata companies employ over 55,000 people in the state. Tata Trusts, in collaboration with the Assam government, has established a network of 17 cancer hospitals, significantly enhancing healthcare access in the region.
Additionally, Tata Consumer Company operates 21 assets and 20 manufacturing and packaging units in Assam, reinforcing its commitment to the tea industry and local economy.
Chandrasekaran emphasized that the upcoming electronics facility will attract global companies and top talent to Assam, fostering partnerships across industries such as automotive, communication technology, logistics, and electronics. This move aligns with the state’s broader vision to establish itself as a leading hub for semiconductor and electronics manufacturing.
Honoring Ratan Tata’s Legacy
Announcing the cabinet’s decision, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated, “Today, we have decided to name the Electronic City in Jagiroad as Ratan Tata Electronic City, Jagiroad.” This tribute honors the late industrialist’s immense contributions to India’s industrial and technological growth while reinforcing Assam’s ambition to become a key player in the global semiconductor and electronics supply chain.
The Union Minister for Railways, Electronics & IT, and Information & Broadcasting also reaffirmed Assam’s growing importance in India’s semiconductor ecosystem during the Advantage Assam summit, further validating the state’s rising stature in the technology-driven economy.
With this initiative, Assam is not only commemorating Ratan Tata’s visionary leadership but also laying a strong foundation for technological advancement, economic growth, and job creation in the region.
