Bhopal: AIIMS Bhopal is introducing AI-powered cancer screening machines to enhance early detection and improve patient outcomes. The hospital will install two versions of the system- Optascan Ultra for large labs and Optascan Lite for smaller facilities. The machines, costing around Rs 40 lakh, aim to speed up diagnosis and reduce dependence on costly imaging tests.
AI to Improve Early Cancer Detection
The new screening machines use artificial intelligence to analyze slides more efficiently than traditional methods. Optascan Ultra can process up to 480 slides simultaneously, while Optascan Lite is designed for smaller setups, scanning up to 15 slides at a time. AIIMS Bhopal officials state that these systems will help detect cancer at an early stage, particularly benefiting patients in remote and underserved regions.
Cost-Effective Alternative to Imaging Tests
Professor Jagat R Kanwar from the Oncology department highlighted that AI integration could reduce reliance on expensive procedures such as MRIs and CT scans. The AI system will assess cancer risk based on genetic and lifestyle factors, offering a data-driven approach to early diagnosis.
Targeting Underserved Regions
Executive Director Prof Dr Ajay Singh emphasized that the initiative aims to improve accessibility to cancer screening, especially in rural areas where early detection facilities are limited. The technology is expected to help identify cancer in asymptomatic individuals, enabling timely treatment and improving survival rates. By integrating AI-driven tools, AIIMS Bhopal seeks to enhance cancer diagnosis efficiency while making screening more accessible and affordable.
