Gandhinagar, October 2 (APAC Media): Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) and Gujarat State Electricity Corporation Limited (GSECL) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to identify and assess suitable sites in Gujarat for potential new nuclear power projects.
The agreement, signed on October 1, aims to evaluate Gujarat’s potential for future nuclear power development and support India’s efforts to expand reliable, low-carbon electricity generation.
NPCIL, GSECL to Assess Potential Nuclear Sites
The MoU establishes a framework for cooperation between NPCIL and GSECL, including information sharing, identification of potential locations and assessment of their technical suitability for nuclear power projects.
The site assessment will form part of the preliminary process for evaluating locations that could support future nuclear power generation in the state.
The MoU was signed in the presence of Rushikesh Patel, Minister of Energy & Petrochemicals, Panchayat & Rural Housing, and Legislative & Parliamentary Affairs, Government of Gujarat.
Senior officials present included Ashwini Kumar, Principal Secretary, Energy & Petrochemicals Department and Chairman, GSECL; V. Rajesh, Chairman and Managing Director, NPCIL; and P.S. Karthigeyan, Joint Secretary (Power & ER), Department of Atomic Energy, along with officials from NPCIL and GSECL.
Gujarat’s Role in India’s Nuclear Energy Expansion
The collaboration comes as India seeks to expand nuclear power as part of its long-term energy strategy. Nuclear generation is expected to contribute to reliable electricity supply while supporting efforts to increase low-carbon power.
For Gujarat, the MoU provides a framework to examine potential locations and assess their suitability before any future project can proceed.
The initiative also aligns with India’s broader clean-energy transition and its target of achieving net-zero emissions by 2070.
