New Delhi: As Vodafone Idea (Vi) plans to roll out 5G services in key markets, Nokia has stepped in as a crucial technology partner, providing its latest 5G and 4G baseband and radio modules. With Vi targeting a commercial 5G launch in March 2025, the telecom operator is swiftly expanding its 4G network as well.
Rapid Deployment of 5G Infrastructure
Nokia has already delivered the necessary equipment for the 5G rollout, and deployment is advancing rapidly. The company’s cutting-edge AirScale portfolio, featuring Multi-Radio Access Technology (RAT) baseband units and radio modules, is being implemented to enhance Vi’s network coverage and capacity.
Additionally, Nokia’s energy-efficient ReefShark System-on-Chip technology is expected to optimize network performance while reducing power consumption. The Network Management system is also being upgraded with the MantaRay series of products, ensuring seamless operations. As part of a phased rollout, Nokia will deploy its next-generation AirScale Multi RAT Outdoor compact baseband units to enhance service reliability.
Expanding 4G Network for Enhanced Coverage
Alongside 5G preparations, Nokia is significantly expanding Vi’s 4G network. By March 2025, more than 60,000 technology sites will be delivered, along with thousands of new 4G sites. This expansion includes technology additions and spectrum bandwidth enhancements on existing sites. Furthermore, ultra-lean sites are being introduced in dense urban areas to improve service experience and meet growing data demands.
Strategic Collaboration for Future Connectivity
Currently, Vi is prioritizing investments and accelerating capital expenditure deployment to meet its network expansion goals. The company acknowledges Nokia as a reliable long-term partner that has consistently delivered high-quality support. The quick 4G expansion facilitated by Nokia is expected to improve Vi’s coverage and capacity, ensuring a superior customer experience.
As Vi moves forward with its 5G and 4G expansion strategies, its partnership with Nokia is anticipated to play a pivotal role in strengthening India’s telecom infrastructure and delivering next-generation connectivity to consumers and businesses.
