Gujarat government facilitates 1,500 residential apartments in Dholera to house employees and expats for Tata Electronics' Rs 91,000 cr semiconductor fab. 250 units already occupied, with more under construction and critical infrastructure being developed.

Ahmedabad: The Gujarat government is facilitating the development of 1,500 residential apartments to accommodate employees and expats working at the Dholera facility in the Ahmedabad district, to support the country’s first fabrication unit by the Tata Group, according to reports.

The aim is to build a robust ecosystem around Tata Electronics’ Rs 91,000 crore fab, which is expected to create over 20,000 direct and indirect skilled jobs.

According to reports, Mona Khandhar, Principal Secretary at the Gujarat Department of Science and Technology, confirmed that around 275 apartments are already available, of which about 250 have been occupied by Tata Group employees, their suppliers, and other partner companies. Another 225 units are nearing completion.

All these serviced apartments, ranging from one to three-bedroom configurations, are located within the Dholera Special Investment Region (DSIR), close to the under-construction fab.

It was also reported that in addition to the existing units, construction has begun on 1,000 more apartments, which are expected to be ready by February or March 2026.

It was clarified by Khandhar that the “Gujarat government has not directly constructed these facilities,” and the plots were auctioned through a special purpose vehicle (SPV) formed by the government and private developers are building the housing.

She further added that these units are separate from those planned by the Tata Group itself.

As part of Tata’s independent residential development, the company has been allotted 10 acres in the first phase, where it plans to build 530 apartments by mid-2027.

Given the strategic significance of the semiconductor project, the state government is also developing critical infrastructure and civic amenities in the region.

These include a fire station, school, hospital, desalination plant, hotel and even a ‘Global Tent City’ to accommodate visiting professionals and staff.

Many of the incoming employees are foreign nationals and the aim is to offer world-class facilities to ensure smooth operations and quality of life.

Union Minister for Electronics and IT, Ashwini Vaishnaw last year announced that the first chip from the plant is likely to roll out by December 2026, marking a new era in India’s semiconductor journey.
