Kolkata: The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) is planning a new water supply project near Dhalai Bridge in Garia to ensure a clean drinking water supply to residents of South and South-East Kolkata.
The construction of the water treatment plant is going on the warfront. The 90 km pipeline to distribute this water will soon start for Rs 350 crore.
This water supply will benefit a few lakhs of residents of Tollygunge, Jadavpur and other parts of the Eastern Metropolitan Bypass.
At present, there is a water treatment plant at Dhapa where 30 million gallons of water are produced daily. Next to this, another plant is being set up with a daily 20 million gallon water capacity.
The newly planned water treatment in Garia will produce 10 million gallons of clean drinking water daily. KMC intends to make this plant functional by next March-April.
KMC also plans to lay 50 km of new pipeline to supply water to different booster pumping stations from the new water treatment plant coming up at Dhapa.
The Planning and Development Department of KMC is overseeing the laying of 36 to 40 km of pipelines to supply water to different areas from the Garia plant.
Once Jadavpur and Tollygunge start getting this clean drinking water, it will reduce the pressure on the groundwater.
Once the new plant in Dhapa comes up, at least 160-165 deep wells drawing groundwater will be shut down. Once the Garia plant is up and running, another 100 deep wells will be shut down.
