New Delhi: PayPal has announced the launch of PayPal World, a cross-border payments platform developed in collaboration with major global digital wallet providers. The initiative brings together India’s NPCI International, which operates the Unified Payments Interface (UPI); China’s Tenpay Global, the cross-border payments arm of Tencent; and Latin America’s fintech firm Mercado Pago. The platform aims to simplify international transactions by allowing users to make payments through their local digital wallets while engaging in cross-border commerce.
Scheduled to launch in fall 2025, PayPal World seeks to integrate multiple payment ecosystems under a single framework. According to the company, the platform will enable PayPal and Venmo users to send money globally, even to recipients who do not have PayPal accounts. Users will also be able to make payments abroad using familiar domestic systems. For example, Indian consumers will be able to complete international purchases using UPI, while travelers in China can transact through Weixin Pay by linking with PayPal.
The initiative responds to growing global demand for frictionless digital payments, especially as e-commerce and remote financial interactions expand. According to NPCI data, UPI recorded transactions worth over $238 billion in June 2025. Mercado Pago reported a total payment volume of $58.3 billion in the first quarter of the year. Tenpay Global has also signaled plans to strengthen its remittance infrastructure as part of the collaboration.
PayPal stated that Venmo users will gain access to broader global merchant networks beginning in 2026, as the platform continues to evolve.
