Kolkata: The West Bengal government is setting up three Food Streets across Kolkata. The first such Food Street will be set up at Russell Street and will be inaugurated on 30 July.
The other two Food Streets will come up later. One will be on the road between the Tala Jheel Park and the Tala Gymkhana Ground. The other will be next to Patuli Jheel.
The Kolkata Municipal Corporation’s (KMC) Health Department’s Food Safety Arknis is making these three Food streets for Rs 3 crore.
There are a total of 32 stalls set up in the Russell Street Food Street in the likes of Singapore and Bangkok.
Out of these 30 stalls, have been allotted to the existing hawkers only. They will be allowed to sell different types of street-side food items only.
The other two stalls will be allocated later through a lottery. On the day of launch in July, the 30 hawkers will be handed the new vending certificates.
An amount of Rs 800 will be charged for each certificate. They can renew their licenses annually for only Rs 800.
KMC will treat these three Food Streets as an urban model. Fire safety will be followed strictly and no one will be allowed to cook on stoves or ovens.
Induction ovens are made mandatory. Plastics and thermocols are also not allowed. Vending certificates will be issued only under these conditions.
While the existing hawkers are being reinstated at Russell Street, the other two streets will have shops leased out to new hawkers.
