Mumbai, May 8 (APAC Media): The Maharashtra government has taken a major step toward developing sustainable urban water transport.
As part of the effort, the Maharashtra Maritime Board (MMB) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Norway-based marine technology company HYKE AS for the ambitious Mumbai Water Metro project.
The agreement was signed in the presence of Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Ports and Shipping Minister Nitesh Rane.
The MoU aims to strengthen cooperation in sustainable water transport, shipbuilding, and vessel manufacturing while supporting the implementation of the Mumbai Water Metro project across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).
Key Highlights of the Project
- Project model: Public-Private Partnership (PPP)
- Estimated investment: Rs 6,600 crore
- Planned network length: 340 km
- Expected passenger capacity by 2031: 7.5 crore annually
- Phase 1 rollout: Expected to begin in December this year
A Detailed Project Report (DPR) prepared by Kochi Metro Rail Ltd. proposes the following:
- Upgradation of 24 existing terminals on 21 operational waterways
- Construction of 21 new terminals across 10 additional waterways
The project is modelled on the successful Kochi Water Metro system and is expected to transform urban mobility in Mumbai and the surrounding regions.
Major Routes in Phase 1
The first phase will focus on high-traffic coastal corridors, including:
- Gateway of India – Nariman Point
- Radio Club – Navi Mumbai International Airport
- Versova – Madh
- Borivali/Marve – EsselWorld
- Bandra – Worli – Nariman Point
- Kalyan – Dombivli – Mumbra – Kolshet
- Vasai – Mira Bhayander
Government officials said the project will promote environmentally friendly transportation while reducing road congestion in the MMR.
