New Delhi, May 9 (APAC Media): Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) on Friday announced that Dr. Ashok Kumar Panda has assumed charge as Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of the company with effect from May 9, 2026.
Dr. Panda, who previously served as Director (Finance) and also held additional charge of Director (Commercial), brings over three decades of experience in the organisation.
He began his career with SAIL in 1992 as a Management Trainee (Technical) after completing his B.E. in Electrical Engineering.
Over the years, he has handled key responsibilities across multiple plants and units, with experience spanning operations, finance and commercial functions.
During his tenure as Director (Finance), Dr. Panda led several initiatives aimed at improving operational efficiency and profitability, including technical interventions, product basket enhancement, and policy reforms across major business verticals.
As Director (Commercial), he focused on improving sales performance, enhancing Net Sales Realisation (NSR), reducing inventory levels, and strengthening product branding and market alignment.
Upon taking charge as CMD, Dr. Panda outlined the company’s strategic priorities going forward.
“Steel Authority of India Limited is on track for its next phase of capacity expansion to 35 MTPA. Alongside expansion, we will continue to place the highest priority on safety across all our workplaces,†Dr. Panda said.
He further emphasised the importance of securing raw material availability to support long-term growth.
“Strengthening raw material security through enhanced domestic mining and exploration of overseas assets will be critical to support our growth ambitions,†he said.
Dr. Panda also highlighted the company’s focus on improving market presence and product mix.
“We are committed to expanding our market reach with a sharper focus on value-added products, strengthening our brand connect and ensuring sustained value creation for all stakeholders,†he added.
The company said his appointment comes at a crucial stage as SAIL advances its expansion and modernization roadmap.
