New Delhi: The Department of Surgical Oncology at Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar Institute Rotary Cancer Hospital, AIIMS Delhi, has officially launched the advanced da Vinci surgical system to expand access to precision-driven cancer treatment.Â
The move is expected to significantly strengthen cancer care delivery in India’s largest government hospital.
Pilot Phase Success and Trained Expertise
During the pilot phase, the department successfully carried out nearly 100 surgeries using the da Vinci system, reflecting both clinical confidence and high patient demand. The department currently has five trained surgeons capable of performing a wide spectrum of cancer procedures with the new technology.
The robotic system is especially valuable for complex surgeries, including very low rectal resections, Whipple’s procedures for pancreatic cancer, and advanced chest operations. It is also being applied to cancers of the rectum, esophagus, pancreas, urology, and gynecology, where surgical precision is critical.
Equitable Access for All Patients
All robotic-assisted surgeries at AIIMS Delhi will be provided free of cost. This ensures that patients from all sections of society can access advanced treatment without financial barriers.Â
In addition to affordability, the approach is expected to improve recovery outcomes, with patients benefiting from fewer complications, smaller incisions, reduced blood loss, less pain, and quicker recovery times.
AIIMS Delhi emphasized that the introduction of robotic-assisted surgery aligns with its mission to expand equitable access to advanced healthcare. With cancer cases rising across India, the hospital aims to meet the growing demand for precision treatments, particularly as a national referral center for some of the most complex cancer cases.
Advantages for Patients and Surgeons
The da Vinci surgical system not only benefits patients but also enhances surgical practice. It provides surgeons with greater visibility, control, and accuracy, which are especially important during demanding procedures. By integrating this technology into oncology, AIIMS Delhi has positioned itself at the forefront of advanced cancer care within the public sector.
