New Delhi: India’s semiconductor ambitions received a major boost as a telecom system powered by domestically manufactured chips earned the TEC (Telecommunication Engineering Centre) certification.
The announcement was made by IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw through a post on X, where he described the achievement as a “big leap for India’s semiconductor story.”
The TEC certification, issued by the Telecommunication Engineering Centre under the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), signifies that the system has successfully met rigorous quality and performance standards.
This marks the first time a telecom system running entirely on made-in-India chips has cleared such testing, positioning the country closer to its goal of technological self-reliance under the Make in India initiative.

While India is still building capacity for advanced semiconductor fabs, its strategy is sharply focused on mature-node manufacturing, particularly in the 28nm to 65nm range.
These nodes are critical for high-demand sectors such as telecom, automotive and industrial electronics.
According to Bastion Research, India’s approach diverges from the global race for ultra-advanced chip nodes by instead targeting a vital gap in the global supply chain – reliable and scalable mature-node production.
The analysis noted that the country is already offering world-class integration services and matching international benchmarks in both talent and technical capability. This positions India to scale quickly and meet the surging demand for semiconductor-based solutions worldwide.
With TEC approval validating performance and quality standards, the breakthrough is expected to accelerate India’s broader semiconductor roadmap and attract further investment into the sector.
