New Delhi: OpenAI is moving beyond software and preparing to launch its first hardware device by 2027. Industry reports indicate the company is collaborating with Jony Ive, Apple’s former chief designer, and has acquired his AI-focused hardware startup, io, to shape the project.
The company has been steadily building its hardware team by recruiting senior Apple talent. Tang Tan, Apple’s former head of product design, has joined as OpenAI’s Chief Hardware Officer. He has told potential recruits that the company aims to create a more collaborative environment than what is typically seen in large tech firms.
To support its hardware ambitions, OpenAI is tapping into Apple’s established supply chain. The company is partnering with Luxshare, a Chinese firm known for assembling iPhones and AirPods, to produce its upcoming devices. Discussions have also been held with Goertek, another Apple supplier, for components such as speaker modules.
One of the early prototypes under development is reported to be a pocket-sized, context-aware device designed to integrate directly with ChatGPT. Other ideas under consideration include AI-driven smart glasses, voice recorders, wearable pins, and smart speakers without displays. While details remain limited, the focus appears to be on creating consumer devices that allow for seamless, real-time interaction with OpenAI’s AI models.
The move signals OpenAI’s attempt to expand its role in the consumer technology space, competing with established players in the hardware and AI markets. With a launch timeline set for 2027, the project highlights how AI companies are increasingly seeking hardware solutions to make their technology more accessible in everyday life.
