Kolkata: Kolkata has been ranked the safest city in India for the fourth year running, as per the data from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB).
As per the NCRB report, Kolkata recorded 83.9 cognizable offences per lakh population in 2023.
This was the lowest among the 19 Indian cities with populations above 20 lakh that NCRB surveyed.
Kolkata was followed on the safety quotient by Hyderabad (332.3 offences per lakh), Pune (337.1 per lakh) and Mumbai (355.4).
On the other end of the scale, Kochi was the most unsafe amongst large cities with 3192.4 cognizable offences per lakh people, followed by Delhi at 2105.3 and Surat at 1377.1.
NCRB noted a steady decline in Kolkata’s crime rate over the past two years. This was 103.5 per lakh in 2021 and 86.5 per lakh in 2022.
The average rate of cognizable offences across the 19 surveyed cities in 2023 was 828 per lakh.
