New Delhi: The Chandrayaan-4 mission is targeted for launch in 2027, the government informed the Rajya Sabha on 11 December.
Minister Dr Jitendra Singh said the mission’s primary goal is to execute a successful lunar landing, collect samples using a robotic arm, lift off from the Moon’s surface and return the material to Earth, marking India’s first sample-return attempt.
He said the spacecraft configuration has been finalised, and critical design work covering avionics, mission planning and flight dynamics has been completed.
The mission is planned to land in the Moon’s southern polar region, an area known for its geological diversity and proximity to permanently shadowed regions, which may contain water ice.
Dr Singh clarified that, unlike Chandrayaan-5, which is being developed jointly by ISRO and Japan’s space agency JAXA, Chandrayaan-4 has no international collaboration and is an entirely Indian mission.
