New Delhi: All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi, has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) to strengthen research in space medicine and support the country’s growing human spaceflight programme.
The agreement was signed between AIIMS Director M. Srinivas and Dinesh Kumar Singh, who heads the Human Space Flight Centre. The ceremony was attended by ISRO Chairman V. Narayanan, along with senior faculty members and researchers from AIIMS.
Significance of the partnership
Long-duration human space missions such as the Bharatiya Antariksh Station and crewed missions to the moon offer unique medical challenges due to the extreme space environment & microgravity. The joint effort by AIIMS Delhi and ISRO is targeted to conduct studies to develop multidisciplinary space medicine expertise, medical devices, procedures, and protocols to maintain human health & performance under extreme space environments, as well as advance health care for the nation.
Focus on key areas of space medicine
Under the partnership, the two institutions will jointly carry out both ground-based and space-based research in space medicine. The collaboration will focus on several scientific areas, including human physiology, cardiovascular and autonomic regulation, musculoskeletal health in microgravity, microbiome and immunology, genomics, biomarkers, and behavioural health.
AIIMS Director M. Srinivas said the agreement marks an important step in expanding India’s capabilities in space medicine. He stated that the collaboration between AIIMS and ISRO is expected to accelerate research in this specialised field and contribute to scientific advancements that could benefit patients, the country, and the global scientific community.
Strengthening India’s space capabilities
ISRO Chairman V. Narayanan said partnerships with premier research and medical institutions such as AIIMS would play a crucial role in strengthening India’s human spaceflight ambitions and expanding scientific knowledge related to space health.
