“Expanding our joint hydropower portfolio with DGPC to over 5,000 MW marks a significant milestone in strengthening our clean energy partnership in Bhutan. The inclusion of the Nyera Amari project underscores the scale, ambition and long-term commitment of this collaboration. This partnership is key to supporting Bhutan’s economic growth by harnessing its hydropower potential while also enhancing regional energy security. For India, particularly during peak summer demand, such initiatives ensure access to reliable and clean power,” said Praveer Sinha, CEO, Tata Power.
On November 19, 2024, with the support of the Royal Government of Bhutan and the Government of India, Tata Power and Druk Green Power Corporation (DGPC) entered into a strategic partnership to jointly identify and develop hydropower and solar projects in Bhutan.
The collaboration spans a diversified clean energy portfolio, including hydropower projects such as Khorlochhu (600 MW), Dorjilung (1,125 MW), Gongri Reservoir with Jeri Pumped Storage (2,540 MW combined), Chamkharchhu IV (364 MW), and Nyera Amari I & II (404 MW). It also includes plans to jointly develop 500 MW of solar photovoltaic capacity in the country.
The partnership has emerged as the largest between two leading power companies of India and Bhutan in Asia’s clean energy sector. Both companies noted their long-standing association of over 15 years and their strong track record in the energy space.
Work has already commenced on key projects including Khorlochhu and Dorjilung, which together account for around 35% of the committed 5 GW portfolio.
Tata Power’s engagement with DGPC dates back over a decade to the 126 MW Dagachhu Hydropower Project, Bhutan’s first public-private hydropower partnership, which was commissioned in 2008.
