New Delhi, May 11 (APAC Media): India successfully carried out another test of its advanced missile capabilities under Mission Divyastra by flight-testing the MIRV-equipped Agni missile from Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Island in Odisha.
The test has drawn attention globally due to the strategic importance of Multiple Independently Targeted Re-Entry Vehicle (MIRV) technology.
What exactly did India test?
India tested an advanced Agni missile system equipped with MIRV technology. During the trial, multiple payloads were launched toward different targets spread across a large geographical area in the Indian Ocean Region. The government confirmed that all mission objectives were successfully achieved.
What is MIRV technology?
MIRV, or Multiple Independently Targeted Re-Entry Vehicle technology, allows a single ballistic missile to carry and deploy several nuclear warheads simultaneously. Each warhead can be directed toward different targets or even the same target with separate timings.
This technology also enables the missile to carry decoys, making it difficult for enemy missile defence systems to intercept incoming warheads.
Why is the test important for India?
The successful test significantly enhances India’s strategic deterrence capability. A MIRV-equipped missile can strike multiple strategic targets using a single launch, increasing operational efficiency and strengthening second-strike capability.
The missile system includes indigenous avionics and highly accurate sensor packages developed by Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) with support from Indian industries.
Which countries currently possess MIRV technology?
The United States was the first country to deploy MIRV-enabled missiles in the 1970s, followed by the Soviet Union. Today, countries such as the UK, France, China, and Russia also possess MIRV capability. With continued advancements, India is steadily joining the group of nations with highly sophisticated strategic missile systems.
