New Delhi, May 12 (APAC Media): The Union Government has launched the ‘SEHAT Mission,’ a major initiative aimed at connecting agriculture, nutrition, and healthcare through scientific collaboration and evidence-based policymaking.
Launched by Union Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda and Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, the initiative reflects the government’s growing focus on preventive healthcare, nutrition security, and tackling lifestyle diseases through integrated action across sectors.
What is the SEHAT Mission?
The “SEHAT Mission,” jointly launched by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) and the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), aims to create a strong connection between agriculture, nutrition, and healthcare with the broader goal of building a “Healthy Food, Healthy Farms, and Healthy India” framework.
Why is the mission important?
The mission reflects a major shift in India’s healthcare strategy. According to JP Nadda, the government is now focusing not only on treatment but also on prevention, early detection, and long-term care. The initiative seeks to address health challenges before they become serious illnesses.
What problems will the mission address?
The SEHAT Mission aims to tackle two major concerns simultaneously — malnutrition and the rising burden of non-communicable diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, and cancer. By improving the quality of food systems and nutrition, the government hopes to reduce lifestyle-related diseases across the country.
How is the mission different from earlier approaches?
For decades, agricultural and medical institutions in India worked separately. The partnership between ICAR and ICMR marks a new integrated approach where scientific research, agriculture, and healthcare policy will work together. The government believes this collaboration will lead to evidence-based and indigenous solutions suited to India’s needs.
