Noida, May 12 (APAC Media): Apple and Google have begun rolling out end-to-end encryption (E2EE) for Rich Communication Services (RCS) in a significant update aimed at improving the privacy and security of cross-platform messaging.
The feature is launching in beta for users on iPhones running iOS 26.5 with supported carriers and Android users on the latest version of Google Messages. Once fully enabled, messages sent over RCS will be end-to-end encrypted, meaning they cannot be read while in transit between devices.
A lock icon will appear in RCS conversations to indicate that encryption is active. The companies said encryption will be enabled by default and gradually expanded to both new and existing chats over time.
“End-to-end encryption for RCS is an important step toward making messaging more secure across platforms,” a joint statement from Apple and Google said.
RCS is widely seen as the successor to SMS, offering modern features such as read receipts, typing indicators, and improved media sharing.
However, it has historically lacked consistent end-to-end encryption across devices and operating systems.
Apple said its iMessage service remains fully end-to-end encrypted by default. “iMessage was built with privacy at its core and continues to provide end-to-end encryption for users within the Apple ecosystem,” the company noted.
The rollout marks a rare collaboration between the two technology rivals as pressure increases to standardise secure messaging across platforms.
