New Delhi, May 13 (APAC Media): The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday launched the country’s first artificial intelligence-enabled monsoon advance forecasting system.
The new system is capable of predicting the onset of the monsoon at the block level up to four weeks in advance.
High-Resolution Rainfall Forecasting Pilot Introduced
Along with the monsoon forecasting model, the IMD also launched a pilot project developed by the National Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting (NCMRWF) for high-resolution rainfall forecasting in Uttar Pradesh.
The AI-powered pilot system can generate rainfall forecasts with a spatial resolution of one kilometre grid, allowing more precise and localised weather predictions.
Hyperlocal and Farmer-Centric Forecasting
According to the IMD, both systems are designed to provide hyperlocal, impact-based, and AI-driven weather services across the country. The models have been developed in consultation with the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare.
Officials said the forecast data will be shared with farmers through an application created by the ministry and through the Agri Stack platform to support better agricultural planning and decision-making.
Jitendra Singh Highlights Importance of AI Integration
Launching the two systems, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Earth Sciences Jitendra Singh said the block-level monsoon forecasting model combines existing numerical weather prediction systems with artificial intelligence to generate advanced monsoon forecasts.
Congratulations India Meteorological Department (IMD) for entering an era of Artificial Intelligence (AI) enabled Weather Forecast Systems. Launched today AI-enabled Systems to provide Hyper-Local Weather Forecast Services and Strengthen Climate Resilience.
