New Delhi: The armed forces will prioritise capability enhancement as part of a long-term roadmap aimed at preparing the military for emerging security challenges and the centenary of Independence. The Defence Forces Vision 2047 document outlines plans to modernise existing platforms, induct advanced weapon systems and integrate emerging technologies across operational domains.
The strategy emphasises strengthening defence preparedness by upgrading current assets while gradually introducing next-generation capabilities. It highlights technological advancement as a critical component in ensuring the armed forces remain equipped to deal with evolving threats.
Promoting self-reliance in defence manufacturing is a central pillar of the vision. The document calls for stronger support for the domestic industry, greater focus on research and innovation, and reforms to procurement frameworks such as the Defence Acquisition Procedure to further strengthen the indigenous defence ecosystem.
To address the requirements of multi-domain warfare, the roadmap proposes the creation of specialised capabilities, including a defence geo-spatial agency, a data force, a drone force and a cognitive warfare action force. It also recommends establishing dedicated space and cyber commands to strengthen India’s operational readiness in emerging domains.
The plan further calls for expanding ballistic missile and air defence systems under Mission Sudarshan Chakra to protect strategic and economic assets as well as civilian infrastructure from evolving threats.
The vision also highlights the need for deeper coordination among the Indian Army, Indian Navy and Indian Air Force through greater tri-service integration.
Additionally, it proposes strengthening the Agnipath Scheme, raising educational standards for recruits and modernising training programmes.
The transformation roadmap will be implemented in three phases: transition until 2030, consolidation until 2040 and excellence by 2047.
