New Delhi: Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw said India has crossed an important milestone in its semiconductor manufacturing journey, with one fabrication unit set to begin commercial production by the end of February.
Speaking at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, the minister underlined the progress made under the country’s semiconductor programme despite the sector’s high complexity.
“Out of the 10 plants which are approved, four have started pilot production in the last few months and one of them is going to start commercial production in the last week of February,” Vaishnaw said, calling it a significant achievement for India’s electronics manufacturing ambitions.
Emphasising the technological challenges involved, the minister said the semiconductor industry represents the highest level of precision achieved by humans.
Vaishnaw said the government is fully aware of these challenges and has adopted a careful, step-by-step approach to building the semiconductor ecosystem. India, he noted, is starting with 28-nanometre technology and will progressively move to 7 nm, 3 nm and eventually 2 nm nodes in a “very methodical way,” as it builds a resilient and integrated semiconductor value chain.
