Kolkata: Renowned International filmmaker Goutam Ghosh has been sworn in as Sheriff of Kolkata for 2026. The Sheriff is an apolitical honorary office that dates back to 1776 during East India Company rule.
Kolkata along with Mumbai are the only Indian cities to have retained the post. Among official duties, the Sheriff of Kolkata signs legal and administrative documents and monitors allotment of some charitable funds.
With thr appointment of Ghosh, the post of Kolkata sheriff was revived after 5 years. The post had remained vacant after the end of author Mani Shankar Mukherjee’s term in 2019.
According to Ghosh, the digitization of old Calcutta High Court records will.be one of his priorities.
“The brittle pages need to be digitized and it might unearth some important historical documents,” he commented.
Eminent personalities like Sunil Gangopadhyay, Suchitra Mitra, Ranjit Mallick and Chuni Goswami have served as sheriffs of Kolkata in this century.
