Mumbai, June 17 (APAC Media): Cancer patients across Maharashtra and several neighbouring states are set to benefit from improved access to advanced diagnostic and treatment services after the Maharashtra Cabinet approved a Rs 300 crore High-Energy Medical Cyclotron Project (HEMCP) in Nagpur.Â
The cyclotron project, approved at a Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, aims to establish Nagpur as a major radiopharmaceutical hub, ensuring the local availability of critical radioisotopes used in PET-CT scans and nuclear medicine procedures.
At present, many healthcare facilities in Central India depend on major centres such as Mumbai and Hyderabad for these specialised materials.Â
This new facility at Nagpur is expected to reduce dependency on distant cities and improve timely access to cancer diagnosis and treatment.
The project will be developed with a total investment of Rs 300 crore, with the Medical Education Department and the Industry Department sharing the cost equally.Â
A 30-hectare land parcel at Bhansoli (Kinhi) in Hingna taluka has been earmarked for the project.
According to the state government, Nagpur’s central location makes it well-suited to serve patients within a radius of nearly 500 kilometres, covering parts of Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh.
The facility is also expected to strengthen the region’s healthcare ecosystem by supporting institutions such as AIIMS Nagpur, the National Cancer Institute (NCI), and Government Medical College (GMC).
The project will be implemented through ‘Mahacare’ under a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) to be formed under the Companies Act, 2013.Â
Until the SPV is established, a steering committee headed by Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister, Shrikar Pardeshi will oversee its implementation.
With the establishment of the cancer care centre in Nagpur, access to cancer diagnostic services and timely treatment is expected to improve majorly for patients not only in Maharashtra but also in neighbouring states.Â
